Kiss

A Poem

Before she goes
I kiss her on her head

The head that used to smell like me
The head that was once so small it

Fit in my hand
I kiss her

For as many days and nights
She has to spend away from me

My mother heart tries and tries
To stop hurting to stop asking why to

Stop missing her in advance
To no avail

I kiss her six times
on Thursday morning

One for Thursday
One for Friday

One for Saturday
One for Sunday

One for Monday
One for Tuesday,

When she comes back home
Each kiss a prayer

Each kiss all of my love
Each kiss a little protection spell

This life this world this universe this existence
Should be so lucky as to be fueled by a mother’s love.
