Returned with Interest

For further scrutiny.

It wasn’t an annuity
Or money stashed away
But something came to haunt me
On this first October day.

Times lost and forgotten
Surface and live again
As time grows shorter
Words change in my refrain.

They take me back to places
I thought I’d left behind
Now I’ve returned with interest
To see what I can find.

It’s not always satisfactory
The stories changed in time
What appeared fine back then
Is now layered in grime.

Are they merely indiscretions?
Parts of impetuosity
Now returned with interest
For further scrutiny.

The possibilities are endless
Life’s a fickle trade
Tramping through the treacle
Or bouncing in lemonade.

Have my careless attitudes
Now come home to roost
I’m using up the supplements
For yet another boost.

I’m now returned with interest
To pick up from the past
The goods and chattels scattered
As time goes by so fast.
