JS prototypes

JS objects can have common properties and methods that are stored internally as prototypes. These attributes/properties that are available across all instances of the object.

Creating functions

When creating a function 2 things will occur (1) A function object will be created (functionExample) and (2) a second object will be created that is linked to the function called functionExample.prototype.

When a created function is invoked with the new keyword the new object that has been constructed will have indirect access to functionExample.prototype.

Prototypal inheritance

If we add a method to functionExample.prototype all existing objects created will have access to the newly added method. This form of code reuse is known as prototypal inheritance. functionExample objects do not need to have their own methods they all have access to functionExample.prototype.methodExample.

Prototype Chain

When an object gets a request for a property that it does not have, its prototype will be searched for the property, then the prototype’s prototype, and so on.
