Happy New Year! Yes, that is an April Fool's joke. Literally.

The idea of an April Fool came about when Pope Gregory in the sixteenth century CE changed the calendar from Julius and Augustus Caesar's spring equinox marking the new year to a new year that started around the "birth of Christ," also known as the winter solstice.

When New Year's Day moved to January 1st rather than April 1st, the people who continue to celebrate the arrival of a new year with the arrival of spring were called fools. Hence, April Fools.

As a holiday, April Fools is the spring equivalent to Halloween. The autumn holiday celebrates the end of harvest with spooky pranks honoring the spirits of the now deceased summer's harvest. The spring holiday is more about new beginnings, and the pranks are supposed to be funny for all involved.

Spring is a chance to open up your heart, to spread your arms to the sky, and soak in the new warmth of the sun. In fact, the Latin root of April means "to open." In much of the northern hemisphere, it is finally time to get outside and enjoy the world, open doors and windows, and generally take a fresh look at life, open to possibilities.

This April, there is a full moon in Libra on the 8th, the sun enters Taurus on the 19th and the new moon in the bull is on the 23rd. The only retrograde is Pluto, starting the 25th.

Aries (March 20 - April 19)

Take a look in the southeast sky just before sunrise right now and you will see something special. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn in a nice line. As the sun rises, the others fade, but Mars persists, the last star in the sky. So it is with you. This April, the action is starting to happen. Mercury is visiting your sign from the 16th to the 25th. Use the power of the mighty messenger wisely.

Taurus (April 19-May 20)

Venus moves out of your sign at the beginning of April, so something weird might happen on the love/relationship front. A resolution, or revelation, you'll know when you see it. The Sun and Moon arrive in your sign at the end of the month, so dig in for a little spring cleaning to get the house ready for their visit. Remember, your mind and body are the most important house of all.

Gemini (May 20-June 21)

Venus enters your sign on April 3rd. Love is in the air, fluids everywhere… Oh boy just when things start getting good, a pandemic strikes. You know the rules. Wash your hands, don't touch your face, keep social distance. As we move forward into an unknown panic, you are surprisingly feeling capable, maybe even ready to volunteer.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

As the moon exits your sign, how did your emotional check-in go? The path to happiness is knowing there is no path to happiness. Happy comes from inside you. Only you can change your circumstances, and if they are making you miserable, what can you do? April is as good a time for action as you'll ever find. And if you can't quite get a full game going, how about warming up with a little catch?

Leo (July 22-August 22)

As the situation unfolds in front of you, somebody has to take charge. Why not you? Leo, you have your mighty strengths, and there are moments when they will be called upon and tested. But that does not mean you have to lead every charge, or run every show. Speak up when you really know you need to, or others demand it, not just because you can.

Virgo (August 22-September 22)

You got your mind on the money, and money on the mind, as Snoop Dogg would say. Avoid being a deer in the headlights, by looking up every once in awhile. What is really happening around you? Are these relationships putting you in the black or in the red? While you are busy envisioning the green, watch what's going on behind the scene.

Libra (September 22-October 23)

When you make a commitment, you like to go all in. But before making a commitment, you are careful to look at both sides, weigh the pros and cons, and have a good think. Whether you're picking the course of your summer, or the rest of your life, you may be experiencing some doubts. If they are loud, listen. If they are the same old same old, let them go. The new you will grow in the space your baggage used to occupy.

Scorpio (October 23-November 22)

One of your ruling planets, tiny far off Pluto, is going retrograde April 25th to May 1st. Here's a fun opportunity to test the powers of astrology. See what happens between those dates. How is your game? Are you on the ball, or on the bench? Do you find yourself in your normal groove, or did something funky happen? Then if you want to go real nuts, look at your birthchart and see where Pluto is located. Is that where the funk happened?

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

"Home is wherever I'm with you," sang Edwarde Sharpe, and you know it and love it, but now there is a techno remix going around, and the whole thing has a new beat, and even though the words are the same, you know the couple singing them has long since broken up. How does that feel? Does it make you want to look for blue horizons? Or circle the wagons? Maybe you'll get to do both.

Capricorn (December 21-January 21)

The stellar lineup of Saturn, Jupiter and Mars mentioned in the intro carries on in your sign. Saturn is the dimmest, a look at our dark side. Jupiter is at times the brightest, and is a benevolent planet of joy and abundance. Mars calls for action, and moves around quite a bit in the sky. Right now Mars is activating Jupiter's abundance to shine in your darkest places. Whatever that means.

Aquarius (January 21-February 18)

Going with the flow is an art form known to water signs such as Aquarius. Pulling up your anchor, drifting with the stream, with the tide, with the current. You put in your strokes here and there where you have to, raise the sails and chart your course, but you know you are powerless to change the universe. As you watch the new world born around you, it is a good time to remember that special power of yours to just...be.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

On the subject of taxes, there are two opinions. First, get them done early so you have more time to play afterwards. Or, wait until the absolute last minute so they won't take you very long to do. But then there's all that thinking about them, and the big rush at the end. Maybe you can find a happy medium. Maybe. Then again, you are the original fish in poisson d'avril, so maybe it will all be a big fun laugh.
