What is the Grace Hopper Conference?

Despite the number of ladies in attendance, there are still many female technologists unfamiliar with the influential computing conference. The annual event, which takes place over four days, brings together thousands of women in the field of computer science to build a community in tech.

To help spread the word, I’ve compiled a list of all the incredible events packed into the four-day conference. If you have yet to attend, definitely schedule a Grace Hopper Conference for your near future!

Many people attend the Grace Hopper Conference with the singular pursuit of obtaining a job or internship. With so many powerful companies in attendance (including the tech giants Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook), there is a high likelihood of walking away with offers or further interviews. And the interview hall is INCREDIBLE. It is certainly the biggest and most flashy interview hall you will ever behold. Almost every company has gigantic displays, swag giveaways, and interview slots!

In addition to looking for jobs, you can also check out the latest technologies companies are working on at the technology showcase. For example, Facebook allowed users to check out the Oculus Rift in an interactive booth at the 2019 conference.

The PitchHER competition is designed to support and encourage women entrepreneurs. Ten finalists are selected to pitch their business at the conference, and the top three and an audience favorite are chosen to split 100,000 dollars in prize money.

There are two poster sessions held during the conference: a general poster session and the ACM student research competition. The general poster session allows women researchers to give informal discussions to attendees on their research in technical topics, computer science education, or broadening participation in computer science.

The ACM research competition, on the other hand, allows students to compete for the best poster. Judges select the top posters from both the undergraduate and graduate categories, and those students are awarded monetary prizes.

Both poster sessions are an excellent way to connect with female researchers and learn more about their groundbreaking work in computer science.

Although this is not exactly an “event”, this is by far my favorite part of the entire conference. I LOVE meeting all the incredible women in tech while at Grace Hopper. I meet new friends standing in the long queues (lots of lines with 25,000 people), attending the after-hour parties, or just roaming around the convention center. I will continue to attend the Grace Hopper Conference simply to keep meeting exceptional women in tech.
