Devils night

When I got home that night, I noticed the smiling jack-o-lantern in my front yard was crushed. This was far from the first time I have seen something like this happen in my neighborhood, I was unfazed by it. I had seen this in my neighbors yard the previous night and it was only a matter of time before the vandals responsible had gotten to my own front yard. I resigned myself to cleaning it up after I took my groceries inside and put them away. The people who had been doing this were harmless, they had been just stomping pumpkins and leaving, never touching anything on the house.

I made my way to the door and noticed that I had left it unlocked, this was out of character for me as I usually triple check the door whenever I leave the house even if it is just walking down the street. Although it was uncharacteristic of me, I did not think anything of it because even though vandalism was nothing new any kind of theft in the neighborhood would be surprising. With this in mind I was not so much worried as I walked in but I did walk through my house a little slower than I usually would, checking corners and things of that nature. Nothing seemed out of place on my way to the kitchen, after dropping the groceries on the counter I would continue through the rest of the house checking for anything unusual. As I laid the groceries down on the counter I thought I heard something coming from the bedroom across the house and admittedly it put me on edge. I chalked this up to my imagination coming into play since I was slightly paranoid.

Even though I believed that my imagination was the cause of the “sound” I was still slightly paranoid about it so I was hesitant to investigate. I had no choice though, living alone for so long I was accustomed to this nagging feeling of someone always watching me, this was nothing new to me. I could not escape this feeling of not being alone in the house, that unlocked door must have had more of an impact on me than I thought. I made my way down the hall and I could feel my heart beating faster with every step I took, something about this was just too weird for me. Something seemed out of place to me, was it a shut door I thought was open or was it a door that was open that I shut? The light at the end of the hall that was on but I swore I had shut off was taunting me with its dim glow. As I neared the end of the hallway I heard a sound so low that I…
