Why You Should Adopt a Creativity Lens

When I started coaching I wanted things to flow seamlessly.

I wanted to have everything accounted for — to have all bases covered.

While a worthy goal, it is not always reality. Sports and life are complex.

I recognized that coaching requires effective time management and success depends heavily on it. Having a plan is crucial and aligning the vision for a program is key. This takes time and careful thought, but I realized something was missing.

Nothing made this more clear than when I had my first child. No longer could I stow away for hours burying myself in strategy development when I wanted. Working deeply is key, but availability was sporadic.

I had to adjust my game plan.

I had to adopt a creativity lens.

I had to trust the non-linear process of gathering information, stepping away, returning, and beginning. Allowing for more ebb and flow. Not only was this key to developing my craft, a creativity lens has helped in different areas of my life. Whether in the classroom, a meeting or in the waiting area for a dentist appointment, a creativity lens illuminated the importance of cultivating patience, tolerance, and curiosity in the day to day happenings of life.

Be efficient with your time. It is worth it. Schedule your deep work. However, recognize that a solution can’t be rushed or planned for every occasion. Our best ideas and connections can catch us by surprise. Actively working on something is just one part of the process, often following its own timeline.

Adopting a creative lens requires us to be flexible, to be open to change and to embrace a winding path.
