The Moving Giant which Shapes the Land

Glaciers are moving mountain fellows flowing under gravity, calving the valleys

Glaciers are bodies of ice created by the deposition of snow over hundred of years. The accumulated snow between the mountains stacked create solid ice body. These heavy masses when move between the mountains, become the cause of calving for mountains.

This image of Hopper Glacier was taken in July 2021, which is near Hopper Valley Hunza. July is normally a month of hot summer in South Asian region. Therefore, the summer months generate more meltwater flow towards the low stream areas.

During the snowfed season, the upper part of a glacier gets the maximum snow. Due to which its flow towards the lower slope increases. The heavy mass of ice while flowing carries the rocky lower edges of mountains with it. Thus, calving the mountains!

During the melting season, glaciers experience maximum decrease in mass due to ice loss. The lower part of glacier that experience the maximum ice loss starts to decrease. This shrinkage of glacier from the lower part reveals how a glacier was changing the land by calving.
