Hormones fool your body

The story of life after hormones

I was eleven years old the first time I got my period and was not excited about it. I told my mom not to tell anyone. And what do you know? The next day I stepped into my grandma’s place; she came to me with a present. A present, why? Cause you are a big girl now.

That was the beginning. I started to bleed pretty heavily, I had to go the toilet every 50 minutes to stop leaking, but didn’t have any other complaints. At 13 I started to take the pill, to decrease the bleeding. Without thinking, or researching, because the pill is so normalized, you wouldn’t think anything bad about it.

When I was 20 years old, I decided that I wanted to have a Mirena. A couple of my friends already had one, and it was a great alternative to the pill I had been taking for 7 years. I thought the biggest benefit for me was not having a period anymore, but I was wrong. Since I was 10 years old I had a habit of passing out very regularly. The doctors couldn’t find what cause was, but it definitely isn’t normal to pass out. Not passing out anymore, was the biggest perk.

When I started travelling 1.5 years ago, I began reading about hormones, what kind of influence they have on your body and why you can’t get pregnant.

I will make these sentences a little bit easier for you; hormones will not only fool your body, they also make the body think that you are pregnant. That is why you don’t have a period anymore with the Mirena. This means we are fooling our bodies in the worst way.

After years without my period, I decided that I wanted to go through life without any extra hormones in my body. At that point I lived in a rural area in Australia, and it was a better plan for me to wait a couple of months to get it out. In November I flew to Perth for a visa-run and had an appointment at a womans clinic. I was so excited for this moment, to start life without hormones. But, not yet. The gynaecologist couldn’t find the Mirena. I asked her what did that mean? She told me that 1 in 10 women had problems with the IUD, so it was very normal. Very normal? The IUD could have perforated my uterus and all this time I could have got pregnant, that is not normal. I left the clinic disappointed and worried, how could I have not known this?

I would need to do an ultrasound to see if the IUD was still in place. I didn’t know where to go now, I wouldn’t see my GP in the Netherlands for a long time. I was already thinking that there was going to be a surgery to remove the Mirena.

Two months later, I felt the two little strings coming out of my uterus. You have no idea how happy I was. The moment you can feel the strings, means that the IUD is still in the right place. Two months after that I decided to make an appointment here in Bali. That was the best choice. The doctor made an ultrasound and we saw the IUD, we could also see my ovary and he removed my IUD without any pain at all.
